You are still welcome to attend up to three times as a guest, but be advised that there are many fine Toastmaster clubs in our area that are still actively looking for new members.

Great Communicators Are Made, Not Born!
After several years working at a large financial institution, a friend of mine
started wondering why he kept getting by-passed when time came for promotions.
Yes, he had achieved some
success and was manager of his department, but his goal of becoming director
and eventually vice president seemed beyond his reach.
One Saturday afternoon
during a round of golf, I asked him why he was being by-passed. He told me,
"You know, it seems that all the people that are getting promoted are
naturally good communicators. They can think on their feet and know exactly
what to say and when to say it.
This story may sound
familiar. The fact is, good communicators are not
simply born. They've worked on their skills over the years. Many of them have been successful because of the skills they've
picked up while attending Toastmasters meetings.
The Secret to Becoming a Great Communicator
Let's face it, to become
successful at anything, you need to practice,
practice, practice. Becoming a great communicator is no different. In the
Phoenix-Toronto club, you'll learn effective public speaking skills using the
"learn by doing" method. And you'll do it in a friendly, relaxed,
informal and fun setting.
For many, one of the most
enjoyable and educational parts of our meetings is the opportunity to speak for
2 minutes on a subject. Every week, you'll have the opportunity to make an
impromptu speech. It's amazing how quickly you'll become comfortable with
impromptu speeches and toasts.
For others, Toastmasters
offers a terrific opportunity to improve their leadership skills.
At Phoenix Toastmasters, members build their organizational and
leadership skills through the formal 'Communication and Leadership
Program', by taking on different roles at the meetings and by
taking the opportunity to sit on the executive committee.
Here's what Tom Peters, best
selling author of "In Search of Excellence" and "The Pursuit of
Now" has to say about Toastmasters: "Join Toastmasters. Oral
communications skills count. Height and hair color may be in our genes, but
public speaking isn't. One good answer to the public speaking problem is
Toastmasters. They do a famous job of helping people shape their communication
skills."
Here's What You'll Learn
The Toastmasters program can help you:
- become a great communicator,
- learn how to "think on your feet" and express yourself without preparation,
- effectively develop and present ideas,
- offer constructive criticism,
- learn how to express yourself clearly and concisely,
- develop your leadership skills,
- develop your mentoring skills, and
- learn to face your fears.
Developing these skills will help you:
- be a better manager,
- give better sales presentations,
- feel more confident,
- advance and enhance your career,
- be a better coach
The Phoenix-Toronto Toastmasters club would like to help you improve your speaking
skills. And do it at your own pace. We're a small, supportive club, so we can
easily accommodate your needs.
We're dedicated to helping
you learn. And we know we can help you achieve your goals. After all, each of
us has goals as well. And we count on each other to help us achieve them.
How The Club Has Helped Us
Here's what the executive
members of our club have to say about themselves, their goals, and how the
Phoenix-Toronto Club has helped them achieve those goals.
James Bennett - President
"Why join Toastmasters? Ask a few of our members and find out. You may be surprised to hear several different answers. For some, it may be to prepare for a large presentation at work, or perhaps, a wedding speech. Some want to improve their public speaking and communication skills. For me, I joined to improve my presentation style with clients and to gain confidence.
Toastmasters has helped me reach my goals. Communication, like most things in life, can improve with practice. Once I gave my first speech, it became obvious I made the right choice in joining Toastmasters. Not only did my confidence improve, I began to reap the benefits from invaluable feedback. Each additional speech helped me focus on another aspect of communication. I received many tips from fellow members along the road. I now find that giving presentations to clients is more effective, easier and enjoyable.
What proves interesting is that Toastmasters has opened my eyes to new opportunities. I realize I can go even further. Why stop when there's more room to grow? Sticking with the Toastmaster Leadership and Advanced Speech Programs opens new doors. Yes, I have achieved my initial goals, but, in fact, my journey has just started."
|
Elena R. - VP Of Education
"Toastmasters changes not only your ability to speak in front of others, it also changes your personality as well. This has been my experience.
During my 3 years at Phoenix I've learned that criticizing someone without mentioning his "good points" doesn't work. Even more: it can hurt. Doesn't this apply to any situations in our lives? By evaluating and being evaluated by my fellow toastmasters many times I've had chances to constantly grow and improve. The very friendly atmosphere of our toastmasters club helped me overcome my fear of public speaking, become a confident leader, and simply become a better person.
I consider myself lucky to have discovered Phoenix Toronto Toastmasters - the greatest club in Toronto. It is a serious place when it comes to educational programs, but at the same time it is a weekly dose of fun. Can it get any better?"
|
Frank S. - VP Membership
"One of my goals is to improve my communication skills, namely, public speaking and listening well. To my surprise, by joining Toronto Toastmasters Phoenix Club I'm learning and enhancing many other skills. This ranges from leadership, to running effective meetings, to teamwork. I enjoy making a favourable contribution towards our club so that it can continue to reach the the "President's Distinguished Club" status on a regular basis.
Another bonus of the Toastmasters experience and Phoenix Club has been the improved confidence that I have attained. I now enjoy a positive outlook towards the obstacles that we all face on a daily basis.
From time to time we all come to forks in the road on our life's journey. Only you can decide which route to take. For me, joining Phoenix is a welcome change and I would like to thank all of the members for it."
|
Fred B. - VP of Public Relations
"I own a business helping franchise companies select the best franchise
candidates. I've been a member of Phoenix-Toronto
since November 2003. Although this isn't my first experience with
Toastmasters, it is by far the best club for my needs.
I love the fact that I can get slotted in to do a formal speech every
month in addition to the weekly "Table Topics" sessions
which allows me to practice my impromptu speechmaking. It's really come
in handy in my business.
I decided to join Toastmasters because I found that I was having a
difficult time coping with making formal presentations
to groups of 10 or more. What I have learned since joining
Phoenix-Toastmasters is that, for me, the very best way to
prepare, is to not over-prepare. If you'd like to learn what I mean,
join us in a meeting. I'd love to talk to you."
|
Mike G. - Treasurer
"I am a partner in a financial services company. I spend a large part of my time in front of existing and prospective clients. Learning to communicate effectively in front of all sorts of different people is very important to the success of our business. This is why after a long absence I returned to Toastmasters in November of 2007.
I was initially attracted by the friendly enthusiasm of the Phoenix-Toronto club. However it is the quality of the people and their commitment to helping others succeed that keeps me coming back. If you are willing to embrace Toastmasters it can help transform your life and create new opportunities. I can think of no other club that is better in helping achieve these goals than Phoenix-Toronto.
I encourage coming out to a meeting; meeting the members; and learning more about Toastmasters."
|
Rushd A. - Sergeant-at-Arms
"Coming from an engineering background I have always had strong analytical skills. At the same time, I always felt the need to improve my communication skills. This became a priority when I switched my career from production management to business management consulting.
I first read about Toastmasters in the book "Landing a Job for Canadians" while searching for my first job in Canada, but it took me five years before I took any action. Based on a friend's recommendation I searched on the net for clubs in my area.
I joined Phoenix Toronto Toastmasters club in February 2008 after attending just one meeting as a guest. I was impressed by the way the meeting was managed in a friendly and fun environment.
Being a member for less than a year has already improved my impromptu speaking and provided me the chance to improve my leadership skills. I still have a long way to go, but I can see huge potential in the near future.
Do you feel the need to enhance your communication and leadership
skills? Do not waste your time, take action now! It is a great opportunity for not only a better career, but to also improve the quality of your life."
|
Irene K. - Secretary
"Did you ever think that developing your Public Speaking and Leadership
skills could be fun? It is at our Toastmasters club.
I joined Toastmasters expecting to improve my public speaking skills.
What I am receiving exceeds that expectation. I am encouraged to
develop in areas of creativity, leadership, facilitation, listening,
evaluation, writing, team-building and more.
Our club provides a welcoming, relaxed, yet, highly professional
environment offering encouragement, support and constructive feedback.
Phoenix Toastmasters is a well-organized club where humour and
camaraderie abound on Tuesday nights.
Learning can be fun! Come check us out and see for yourself."
|
Lidia S. - Past President
"I find the Toastmasters educational program to be extremely effective and enlightening. There are so many aspects to communication that you may not consciously notice them all on a daily basis. Yet these important skills affect how we interact with others - family, friends, employers or employees. By improving our communication skills, we are better prepared to get our messages across. To understand what others are trying to tell us we must also step back and truly listen. Communication is a skill that must be practiced and honed. It can not be taken for granted.
Phoenix-Toronto Toastmasters is a friendly and supportive club. Our members help each other improve their communication skills while having fun at the same time. We have experienced members that help meetings run smoothly, as well as new and enthusiastic members. It is this mix of ideas that brings energy and life to the club. I joined Phoenix Toronto Toastmasters in February of 2003. I've enjoyed being a member every since!"

then you owe it to yourself to catch the Phoenix Spirit! Drop in and check out the
dynamics of the group yourself. I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself.
