Toastmasters Fall 2005 Contest

The fall Toastmasters contest has two components -- Table Topics and Humorous speech contest. Those who attended the Fall 2004 Area 9 Toastmaster Contest last year know that it was a LOT of fun.

We had some great speeches!

Contest Levels

First we start off with our Toastmaster club contest. The winners of our club contest move on to the area 9 contest. From here the Toastmasters battle it out at the division level. Winners at the Division level will battle it out at the District level in jolly old London Ontario!

Table Topics Pictures and Comentary

Warning! May contain humour. Those without a sense of humour or who are easily offended go someplace else! :)
Laura C. Laura gave us the contest rules with military precision. This year Fred gave us an interesting challenge. He asked "How much deeper would the ocean be if sponges didn't live there?" Fred B., Table Topics Contest Chair
Bing and Debbie, Contest timers I could almost hear Bing thinking "Red Light! Red Light!" It was pretty scary, but at least none of the contestants went over time. Thanks to Bing and Debbie for their help as timers.

Bonnie did a speech with ease. Later Bonnie told me that she was extremely nervous. However, she did such a great job I don't believe it. The judges must have thought the same for she easly glided into a second place finish. Congratulations Bonnie!

Bonnie, Table Topics Second Place Winner
Brian gets his certificate of participation I (James) was the last contestant so I didn't get a chance to hear anyone's table topics until I reviewed the tape the next day. I must say that when I reviewed the tape I was extremely impressed with Brian's speech. Excelent job!

Here, we see Michelle expressing her love for the audience. The judges must have been enamoured with her performance for they awarded her first place in Table Topics. Congratulations Michelle!

Michelle W., Table Topics first place winner!
James, Table topics participant I (James) was the last contestant! Boo! I found this to be a difficult table topic. Once or twice during my speech I drew a complete blank. I thought I paused for an eternity. However, when I viewed the tape my pauses weren't that big at all! I would have been better off to have paused a fraction of a second longer and state my points more clearly. Overall a good learning experience and a lot of fun!

Here we see Susan with her third place win at Table Topics. Congrats!

Susan, Third place table topics Winner
Sandy At this point Sandy made a monolog about how we as Toastmasters must preserve the endangered sea sponge. It was really heart wrenching.

However, when our camera man Joe woke up he found that the batteries in the camera had run down. At this point Joe retired his duties as camera man and returned to the safety of civilian life. :)

Our Club's Humorous Speech Contest

The winners of the humourous speech contest were:
  • First place - Michelle W.
  • Second place - Vlad
Although Vlad did not win first place he made a great attempt. Not only that, but he clearly showed that he understood that an executive members duty was to help provide and promote great service, fun, and learning to the members. The membership looks forward to Vlad overthrowing Michele B's reign! :)

Excelent speech Vlad!

Thanks to our volunteers

Of course most of our club volunteered to help out with roles. I'd like to give special thanks to our photographer Joe and our videographer Marcia.

Area Contest Results

Congratulations Michelle W!

Michelle battled it out in both Humorous and Table Topics at the Area 9 competition. Did she hold her own? Hell ya! Michelle pulled off first place in Table Topics. But did she stop here? No! The competition was fierce but Michelle continued on to an impressive second place finish in the humorous speech contest.

Congratulations Michelle! And behalf of the entire club "thanks!" for giving a powerful showing for our Club.

Last years Area Contest

Our club hosted the Fall contest last year and it was a blast! We met lots of great people from our club (Phoenix-Toronto Toastmasters) and also from other local Toastmaster clubs including Goodyear, Toronto #1, eCommunicators, and Humber Shores.

Toastmasters Division Q Contest

Division Q

Location

Division Q, District 60
Humorous Speech & Table Topics Contest
Date: Thursday, October 20, 2005
Time: 7:00 p.m

Cost

Cost: $5/person at the door, bring
non-Toastmaster guests for ONLY $3/guest
Registration starts at 6:30 p.m

On a Personal Note...

Members should always be charged the same or less than guests. I can't understand the logic of charging guests less than members. What's the benefit of being a member? Why are we discriminating against our own members? It doesn't make sense to me.

Contest Reflections

Other than this minor anomaly the contest was great. I had some good laughs listening to the speeches. Mohan from Goodyear Toastmasters talked about his experiences in the army and his sense of direction. Great speech. And the "bowel buddy" speech...all I can say is that I won't bother to explain it. It was funny. You just had to be there!

The contests are a great source of inspiration, entertainment and fun. I strongly recommend everyone step outside their club environment and experience more of the Toastmaster world.

-- James
