Why Compete as a Contestant?

Why compete? A few reasons come to mind:

a) To challenge yourself - Toastmasters is all about moving outside your "comfort zone", and what better way to do that than by competing? It also allows speakers to acquire contest experience.
b) To learn - Toastmasters contests are educational for both members and the general public. Members who compete always find they have learned something valuable in the process, while non-competitors learn by watching.
c) To win! While competing is a reward all on its own, our contest winners will receive a beautiful trophy and a prize!
d) To represent your club. Our club contest winners will move on to represent us in the area level Fall contest. By showcasing our best, we can demonstrate to our area why our club is as great as it is!

Lets not forget the Refreshments

Our admission fee included free refreshments. We had a good variety of goodies including: Our Club Fall 2006 Toastmaster Contest Organizer Lidia S.
  • Bottled water
  • Regular and Diet coke
  • Three types of juice
  • Chips
  • An assortment of cookies
  • ham
  • Turkey
  • A vast array of cheese and crackers
And of course we also had our trusty box of chocolates. Overall it was pretty good. I think the only criticism was that we should have had a bit less cookies and had some extra vegetables in there as well.

Overall everyone agreed that the $2 cost of munchies was a great investment! Special thanks to Lidia our contest organizer!

Table Topics Contest

This popular contest requires no rehearsal! You can, however, practice at each club meeting or at home! As in our regular meetings, you will be given a topic, and you will have 1-2 minutes to speak about it. Challenge yourself and test your impromptu speaking skills in our Table Topics contest.

The Contestants

Our table topics winner James B.
  • James B.
  • Lara C.
  • Priti R.

The Winners

Congratulations to our first place winner James!

Humourous Speech Contest

Phoenix Toastmasters members are known for their good senses of humour, and here was a great chance to express yourself! Your 5-7 minute speech must not be a stand up comedy routine, but an original speech that incorporates humour. It must have a theme, and should be cohesive, including an introduction, a body and a conclusion. Whether you wish to share a story, a motivational concept or a point of view, find out why other Toastmaster members have competed in this fun and challenging event by being a contestant yourself!

Supporting Cast

In order to run a successful contest, we needed Contest Chairs, Judges, Timers, Counters, and more! On behalf of our Contest Organizer Lidia I'd like to thank everyone who helped out.

Special thanks to our contest chairs Fred, Gino, and Marcia.

Don't forget we are hosting the Toastmasters Fall 2006 Area 58 Contest on October 10th! Light snacks and refreshments will be made available. We look forward to seeing you there!

Comments From the Peanut Gallery

Hi everyone!

Thank you to all our members who participated tonight, as contestants, as supporting cast, and as cheerleaders for our contestants. You all did a phenomenal job.

Our contestants were wonderful! I was very glad not to be a judge tonight, because it was a very difficult decision for them, I'm sure.

Our Table Topics Contest winner was James Bennett, and our Humourous Speech Contest winner was Priti. We are proud that they will be representing us at the Toastmaster Fall 2006 Area 58 Contest on Tuesday, October 10th, which will be held in the Council's Chambers at the Civic Centre. I hope many of us will be able to go see and to support them that night. We will also get to see other clubs' speakers which is inspiring and refreshing.

Good luck and see you soon!

Lidia - Toastmaster Contest Organizer, CTM, CL

Hi all!

I'd like to second Lidia's message and thank all the volunteers that made the evening the success that it was. It was your efforts that made the meeting run so smoothly and efficiently.

Contestants - I'd also like to especially thank you, the contestants, for having the courage to step out of your comfort zone and embrace a unique learning experience. I apologize that I didn't have a chance to speak with each of you last night, but I would like to tell you that your performance last night was outstanding! You were an inspiration to the rest of us. Thanks again for all the thought provoking table topics and the laughter during the humourous speeches.

James & Priti - Congratulations once again. We'll all be routing for you at the Toastmaster Fall 2006 Area 58 contest on Tuesday October 10!

Lidia - thanks for all the hard work you put into this contest. Without you, we would have had a very difficult time putting it all together. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Job well done!

Fred B. - Phoenix-Toronto Toastmasters Club President, CTM, CL
