2007 Fall Club Toastmaster Humourous Speech and Table Topics Contests
Humour and Impromptu Enjoyed by All
Phoenix Toronto Toastmasters is proud to announce our club's Fall Humorous Speech and Table Topics contest results. Whether you competed, participated in a supporting role or just came out to watch, I'm sure you all enjoyed being part of the action and excitement!
When, where, how
WHEN: Tuesday, September 18, 2007 @ 7:00 pm
WHERE: Etobicoke Civic Centre, Boardroom
Admission: FREE
We had many old and new members in the crowd. We also had a few Guest faces in the audience.
Why Compete?
Every year I ask myself "why should I compete?" A few reasons come to mind:
- To challenge myself - Toastmasters is all about moving outside your "comfort zone", and what better way to do that than by competing? It also allows speakers to experience, harness, and master their nervous energy. This is a secret all contestants quickly learn.
- To learn - Toastmasters contests are educational for both members and the general public. Members who compete always find they have learned something valuable in the process, while non-competitors learn by watching.
- To win! While competing is a reward all on its own, our contest winners will receive a beautiful trophy and a prize!
- To represent your club. Our club contest winners will move on to represent us in the Fall Area Level contest. By showcasing our best, we can demonstrate to our area why our club is as great as it is!
A Chocolate Feast
We had our usual assortment of chocolates. Collectively our club is on target to achieve its goal of adding 10 pounds a year of pure chocolate to their Toastmaster portfolio. Way to go team! :)
There was also some nice Tea provided by Ranjani. Nothing goes better with a sugar rush than some caffeine. Thank you Ranjani!
Table Topics Contest
This popular contest requires no prepared speech! However, you can definitely gain an edge by practicing at every weekly meeting. You will notice our top three contestants are also in line to win an award for best attendance record.
It's not just about practice. It's about getting direction and feedback. The Toastmaster manuals cover all the basic skills to make anyone contest-ready.
As in our regular meetings, contestants were given a topic and given 1-2 minutes to speak about it. The only difference is that you have less time to prepare.
An interesting thing was that Frank thought that this would make it harder. "You mean I have less time to prepare?" At first he was a bit worried. Then he realized that all contestants faced the same challenge. It seems he relaxed enough to put on a good show in the contest.
Afterwards he explained his extra confidence to his new philosophy. "Why should I be nervous? I'm the presenter. The audience should be nervous, not me!" This was a unique approach, but it certainly worked for him.

The Winners
Congratulations to our first place winner Frank! Also congratulations to our runners-up James and third place winner Priti. Many people commented that everyone in the table topics competition put on a good show. Congratulations to all our Table Topics contestants!
Humourous Speech Contest
What competition would be complete without a tail of zombie horror, the nightmare of preparing a speech, and those mischievous short people?
This was a great night. Each 5-7 minute speech was more than just a stand up comedy routine. Each was an original speech that incorporated humour into a story.
I enjoyed the unique humour and theme in each speech. I hope watching this contest inspires you to compete in the next Spring contest!

I think it was interesting to note that both contest winners were first-time contestants.
Phoenix-Toronto Toastmasters introduces the "Phoenix Cup"
This year we debut the new Phoenix-Toronto Toastmasters Phoenix Cup. This cup will be engraved with the names of each contest winner along with their standings in the Area, division, district level and beyond. Good luck to our first two cup winners Frank and Dan!
Supporting Cast
In order to run a successful contest, we needed Contest Chairs, Judges, Timers, Counters, Sergeant at Arms, and more! On behalf of our club I'd like to thank everyone who helped out.
Special thanks to our contest organizers, chairs, judges, timers, counters, and camera crew. That means (in no particular order)
