The Importance of Effective Evaluation

  • Giving effective feedback is one of the most valuable skills you will learn as a toastmaster.
  • Good feedback helps us improve. It encourages hard work. It fosters the “learn by doing method” by helping each of us learn from our mistakes.
  • White washed reviews don’t help anyone
  • The speaker has put their trust in you to give them a fair review. To tell them the good, the bad, and the ugly.
  • By giving honest and constructive feedback you will be helping someone rapidly improve their speaking ability.
  • To do more of the good, and less of the bad and the ugly.
  • After all, we all want to give a beautiful speech.

What to look for in evaluating a speech

Different components of public speaking from gestures, to grammar, to speech organization were reviewed. Audience members interacted and added comments on what makes a good or a bad speech.

Evaluation Excercise

We had one of our members give a 2 minute speech. Everyone else worked on writing up an evaluation of the speech. Members were allowed to refer to the handout and any notes they made along the way.

After the speech each member got a chance to critique various parts of the speech.

Follow Up Excercise

The Competent Communicator manual focuses on a different aspect of public speaking. Members were asked to review their manuals. The evaluation section at the end of each assignment provides excellent hints on areas to improve on.

And remember...give feedback to your fellow members. Every speech!
